When an elderly Navy veteran became the victim of a highly organized contractor scam, he found himself facing more than unexpected home repairs. He was left with significant financial loss, unsafe living conditions, and a deep sense of uncertainty about who he could trust.
After being pressured into believing his home needed immediate structural work, he paid the individuals posing as contractors more than $400,000 for repairs that were either incomplete or never performed at all. When his daughter learned what had happened, the situation quickly escalated into a criminal investigation. The individuals responsible were later arrested and sentenced, but the impact of the fraud remained.
This is where the BBB Foundation’s Restoring Trust Program stepped in. Their mission is to support victims of contractor fraud by connecting them with reputable, community-minded businesses that can help repair the damage—both structural and emotional.
MacCoy Home Solutions was one of the companies contacted, and for our team, the decision to help was immediate. As a local, dependable, and honest contractor, we believe that doing what’s right for our community is simply part of the job. This wasn’t just a remodeling project; it was an opportunity to help a neighbor regain security and peace of mind.
A Community Effort to Make Things Right
After assessing the home, it became clear that significant repairs were still needed. To ensure the homeowner received the support he deserved, MacCoy Home Solutions reached out to other trusted local businesses. In total, eight partners joined the effort, contributing time, materials, and expertise.
On the day work commenced, over 25 individuals arrived, including contractors, tradespeople, and community members, all dedicated to restoring this veteran’s home at no cost to him. What began as a $15,000 repair project quickly expanded into more than $50,000 worth of donated labor and materials.
The project wasn’t just about rebuilding a structure. It was about rebuilding trust. The homeowner and his family were able to see firsthand that there are reliable, ethical professionals in the industry who prioritize people over profit.
